Readers of VC Cafe know how big of a fan I am of startup landscapes. It’s not only that a picture is worth 1,000 words, but the landscapes, while limited in scope by definition, provide a snapshot on a particular sector in a moment in time.
That’s why to keep up with the rapid changes in the tech industry, we’re always on the lookout for new, updated landscapes. You can find the previous editions from Q3-Q4 2022, Q1-Q2 2022, July 2021, July 2020 and May 2019.
I’ll keep adding to this post in the first 6 months of 2023, so feel free to check in regularly for updates.
The Israeli startups building the Metaverse (updated Jan 2023)
I’m proud of the work done by my team at Remagine Ventures, to publish the updated map of the Israeli startups building the Metaverse. Since the first version was published in Jan 2022, there were a bunch of new companies created in web3 gaming, security and consumer experiences, and notably Celcius, the crypto lender and former unicorn, went bust.
Open source tech
A new landscape by Greenfield Partners mapped 25 startups (and several unicorns) operating in this space was published by Calcalist in Jan 2023.
The Israeli Generative AI landscape
I published my first list of Israeli startups in Generative AI in Calcaslist back in October 2022. Since then, we’ve seen an explosion in the number of generative AI startups worldwide, as well as in Israel. Most operate in the application layer, and use APIs to power new automations and consumer experiences across various verticals and functions in the company: coding, copywriting, advertising and marketing, design, etc. I used various sources to create this landscape, including the NFX open source list of generative AI startups.

Our latest Remagine Ventures Generative AI startup landscape version was published on Sep 21 2023 – the number of companies more than doubled. Total funding reached $2.3 billion.
Industry 4.0
The 2023 Israeli Industry 4.0 landscape created by Let-Lab, features around 300 startups. The number of AI and sensor startups in this category increased significantly compared to 2021: 81.5% increase in AI startups and a 150% increase in Sensors & Data Analytics startups.
Another notable trend is the rise in energy and sustainability startups, which lead to a new category. This highlights the growing importance of environmentally-friendly technologies in the industry, as companies look for ways to reduce their impact on the planet.
The map also includes information on exits and acquisitions, with 14 startups successfully making their way to the exit ramp.

Web3 and blockchain
Collider capital published the Israeli Web3 startup landscape map in February. The map includes over 120 startups. Israeli Web3 startups include multiple unicorns like Fireblocks, eToro, and Secret Networks, as well as solid categories in wallets, security and tokenisation.
Agtech (agrigultural tech)
Startup Nation Central and Growing IL partnered on creating the 2023 Israeli Agtech landscape. The Israeli Agtech ecosystem is segmented into 6 main sub sectors which are addressing different global challenges:
Ag Biotechnology, Novel Farming Systems, Robotics & Automation, Supply Chain Optimization, Precision ag & Animal ag.
Israeli Climate Tech 2023
On March 2nd 2023, Startup Nation Central launched the Israeli Climate Tech map 2023, including a sample of 115 startups out of over 870 companies that are tackling the biggest environmental challenges facing our planet today. You can play with the interactive clickable map here.
Foodtech
Israel has a growing number of food tech startups. From cultivated meat to alternative proteins, check out the companies here.
Energy Tech
The energy market is hot. New technologies like Nuclear Fusion and the focus on sustainability and impact put clean energy alternatives and climate solutions high on the priority list of many funds.
Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
With 100+ Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)-focused startups and more than $5 billion in capital raised in less than a decade – almost a third of which in the past three years alone – Israel is the country of origin of category-leaders like JFrog, Redis, Snyk, and others.
Grove Ventures mapped 80+ Israeli startups in the SDLC space. The list excludes public/exited companies.
The Viola Generative AI landscape (December 2023)
In late December, in the midst of the war with Hamas in Gaza, Viola published its landscape and report on Generative AI in Israel. It’s great to see that both the landscape and the stats around funding (which ranked Israel the third globally in attracting generative AI investments with $2.2 billion raised in the past 3 years) is consistent with our findings at Remagine Ventures published in September.
