As you may already know, I’ve always been a fan of startup landscapes. The landscape’s visual representation is a way to quickly get a sense of the space. For previous editions, check out these posts from July 2021, July 2020 and May 2019.
This edition includes maps of Israeli startups building the Metaverse, Insurtech, Martitime tech, Proptech and Contech, Digital Health, Smart Logistics and Supply Chain, Sports Tech and ecommerce.
Metaverse tech
Our team at Remagine ventures created the first landscape of Israeli startups building the Metaverse. We mapped over 50 startups that collectively raised $3 billion, including several unicorns (FireBlocks, Celsius, Lighttricks, etc). The landscape was officially published in Calcalist, Israel’s top business publication.
Retail tech and commerce tech
Deloitte issued this new retail tech Israeli startup landscape as part of their latest report on the topic (May 2022)
- 2021 saw $2.4 billion in investments in Israeli RetailTech (180% more than in 2020)
- 45% of investment rounds were early stage, Pre-seed through A (Significant rebound from 39% in 2020)
TaxTech
Deloitte identified tax tech as the new growing segment in Fintech and released the below map, highlighting more than 100 startup companies in the global TaxTech space, segmented by tax solution and target audience, with several Israeli companies featured as prospective future leaders in their respective domains.
Passionscape (freelancer tools + creator ecnonomy)
An updated version of the Passionscape map, highlighting startups helping creators monetise their passion, was published by Israeli Venture firm Benson Oak Ventures.
Fintech
A report by Viola Ventures focused on the Israeli fintech sector with some interesting stats and this updated market map. Fintech and Insurtech startups represent 17% of Israeli unicorns and publicly traded companies.
Blockchain and Web3
Currently there are around 100 Israeli startups operating in the Web3.0/blockchain space. Viola released in March 2022 the updated Israel’s Web 3.0/Blockchain Ecosystem Map: The full list of Israeli start-ups working in the different layers of the space.
Climate Tech
This new landscape map features 180 out of more than 700 startups and growth companies providing solutions across seven verticals: Agriculture and Food, Construction, Energy, Industry, Mobility, Nature and Carbon Tech, and Water.
Consumer Digital Health
Covid-19 changed how we consume digital health services. We are used to getting groceries, hail rides and buy things on our phones with the click of a button – why should health be different?
Viola and SNC mapped the 90 Israeli startups addressing consumer digital health challenges. We’re proud investors in Clay, a paediatric mental health consumer health startup that is still pre-launch – stay tuned!
InsurTech – Insurance + tech
Mizmaa Ventures and IVC put together this Insurance tech landscape. There are several Israeli Unicorns in this category including Next Insurance, At Bay, Lemonade, Hippo Insurance and more to come.
Maritime Tech
TheDock, a startup hub and micro fund dedicated to everything maritime tech, published a new version of their Israeli landscape. They mapped 110 startups in this space including notable companies: Winward (now public in the London Stock Exchange), TruckNet Enterprise, public on TASE.
Proptech and Construction Tech
Proptech Zone published the Israeli property tech startup pyramid, according to funding raised. I’m assuming it’s already out of date, as it’s been published 7 months ago, but at the time of publication there were over 250 Israeli-founded prop tech startups that raised a total of $3.5 billion.
In January 2022, Deloitte and Union Tech Ventures published the construction and property tech startup landscape. They mapped over 250 startups, which in 2021 alone, raised over $530M including Guesty, Versatile and Venn.
SDGs, Impact, People and Planet
Startup Nation Central published a comprehensive map of Israeli startups addressing “Planet SDGs” and “People SDGs”. There are also a number of new funds addressing sustainability, climate tech and SDGs including FirstTime Ventures, Climate Tech and Kompas among others.
Sustainable Supply Chains
Staying on the topic of sustainability, Deloitte partnered with Inbev to map the 2021 sustainable supply chain startups. It also includes some non-Israeli startups, mostly still at a very early stage.
Smart logistics innovation
You’ve heard about the supply chain nightmares during Covid. Startup Nation Central partnered with DSV on this landscape mapping 150 smart logistics startups including several notable startups: Bringg, Bringoz, ScadaFence, Tipa Corp, Fabric and others.
Digital health
2021 was a landmark year for Israel’s Digital Health sector, raising a record $1.9 billion, a 121% increase from the previous year. In July 2021, Vertex ventures published the most updated digital health Israeli startup landscape, highlighting the top 100 startups in the space. Some notable companies in this category include: K Health, Trialjectory, Nanit, AI doc, Nym and Digital Owl.
This landscape by Startup Nation Central and amoon ventures represents a subset of the Israeli digital health startup ecosystem of the Israeli startups working with or alongside the pharma giants. Notable startups include: Nucleai, Immunai, Spark Beyond and Medisafe, among others.
eCommerce and retail tech
TLV partners published this handy map of Israeli ecommerce startups. Commerce tech includes not only DTC brands like Mixtiles or IL Makiage, but the entire value chain of commerce from payments, search, reviews, logistics and platforms.
There are already a number of publicly traded companies and unicorns in the space including Yotpo, Elementor, Forter, Global-e, Riskified as well as a few promising up and coming startups: Syte (disclosure: a Remagine Ventures portfolio company), Santa and others.
Sports tech
In November 2021, Colosseum Sports published the 5th edition of the Israeli sports tech landscape. Israeli sports tech startups raised $1.4 billion in 2021, 3x increase from the previous year. Notable companies include: WSC Sports, Playermaker, Minute Media (disclosure: a Remagine Ventures portfolio company) and Pixellot.
PLG startups
Tami Bronner, a partner at Vertex Ventures, published a great resource for startups explaining Product Led Growth (aka PLG), and mapping the Israeli startups who apply PLG to grow. Read the post and the excellent cheat sheet on PLG indicators.
EnergyTech
Start-Up Nation Central and Ignite the Spark, an energy tech hub in Israel, selected the top 100 startups that focus on energy production, distribution and storage, carbon capture and offset, hydrogen solutions, as well as energy consumption solutions.
Israeli semiconductors
Cardumen Capital put this handy startup landscape showcasing Israeli startups in the semiconductor space – from AI chips to sensing and photonics, Israel continues to be a powerhouse in this space, albeit with a lower number of new companies.
Israel has always been and remains a hotspot for large, established semiconductor companies. However, semiconductor startups over the past few years have not been thriving relative to startups in other fields… Over the past 3 years, there have only been 30 new semiconductor companies created in Israel. That is only 1.6% of the total 1827 new startups in Israel from 2019 to 2021.
